🧠 From Idea to Initiative

Most associations start with a simple idea: something you feel is missing or want to create. You might also know others who feel the same way.

In the early stage, it’s a good idea to:

  • Explore the need among other students
  • Talk to potential members
  • Define what you want to create

You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. The most important thing is to take the first step and test whether there is interest in your idea.

You do not need to have everything planned from the start. The most important thing is to get started.

👥 Find People to Start With

Starting an association alone can be challenging — so it’s smart to gather a small founding group. It’s often recommended to be at least 3–6 people in the beginning, so you have enough capacity and different perspectives.

A core group can:

  • Clarify goals and expectations
  • Divide responsibilities
  • Plan the startup process

Typical roles may include:

  • Chairperson / President
  • Treasurer
  • Event Coordinator
  • Communications Manager

📜 Create a Purpose and Bylaws

To register a student association, you need a clear purpose and bylaws. These give the association direction and make it easier to organize operations. The bylaws should describe, among other things:

  • Name of the association
  • Purpose
  • Membership
  • Board and roles
  • Finances
  • General meeting

You will need these both for the founding meeting and for registration with the Brønnøysund Register Centre.

🏛️ Hold a Founding Meeting

Once the purpose and bylaws are ready, you can invite people to a founding meeting. This is where the association is formally established.

At the meeting you will:

  • Present the idea
  • Review the bylaws
  • Elect the board
  • Sign the founding document

Once this is done, the association is officially established.

🧾 Register the Association with Brønnøysund and Sammen

After the founding, the association should be registered with the Brønnøysund Registers. This gives you an organization number, which allows you to open a bank account, among other things.

You will usually need:

  • Bylaws
  • Minutes from the founding meeting
  • Overview of the board

In addition, you can register the association in Sammen’s association directory to gain access to funding schemes, visibility, and resources.

🚀 Start Activities

Once the formalities are in place, it’s time for the most important part: creating activity in the association.

Start with low-threshold activities, such as:

  • Workshops
  • Social gatherings
  • Introductory meetings

The goal is to make it easy and safe for new members to participate and to build an inclusive environment.

🌱 Build an Association That Lasts

To create a sustainable association, it can be helpful to make a simple plan for the semester or year.

Think about:

  • How you will recruit new members
  • How finances will be managed
  • How you will follow up on and evaluate activities

Characteristics of an association that lasts over time:

  • Regular activity
  • Good communication
  • Openness to new members
  • Clear routines and responsibilities
